The meeting with Muslim clergymen, elderlies and reputable persons of Lagodekhi and Kvareli municipalities

On November 22, The Union Century 21 organized the meeting with Muslim clergymen, elderlies and reputable persons of Lagodekhi and Kvareli municipalities. The leadership of Georgia’s Muslim Community, representatives of legislative and executive authorities also took part in the meeting.
The meeting has dealt with the early marriage that is the complex problem for Georgia. The facts revealed in Lagodekhi municipality lately aroused the deep concern. Circumcision harshly affects the girls, violates their rights, leads to their social isolation and prevents them to complete education. Pregnancy and childbearing in adolescence are the risk factors for the heath of the mother and impetus.
Within the scope of the joint initiative of UNFPA Georgia and the Union Century 21 and in cooperation with the Interreligious Council, since 2016 the first steps have been taken to address the above issues. The purpose of such collaboration is to gain support of religious leaders in the prevention of early marriages. Provision of right massages in public awareness raising process with the help of religious leaders will significantly contribute to the eradication of society’s tolerance towards early marriages.
The meetings with Interreligious Council, Muslim clergymen and representatives of Telavi and Sagaraejo municipalities had already been held.
